The Month I Read Positive News Stories- December 2018 Challenge

Honestly, I couldn’t think of a better way to end the year than by reading about positive news stories that have taken place throughout 2018. Sometimes it feels like there are so many sad, terrible, terrifying news stories being reported on anymore and I definitely loved this chance to take a step back and read about some of the amazing, wonderful people there are in the world and appreciate the fabulous things they’ve done.

I also loved that I got to share these articles with some of my friends and family in an effort to help spread the joy. And although I read one article a day,I just wanted to share seven of my absolute favorites with you to perhaps make you smile.

Gavel the German Shepard

This story starts off very sad: Gavel the German Shepard flunked out of his police dog academy. But, it was the for the happiest of reasons! Little Gavel was way too friendly for life as a police dog. Isn’t that the absolute sweetest reason. It wasn’t that he wasn’t smart enough or lacked the athleticism. He was simply too friendly!

As a sincere animal lover, I appreciated how absolutely this pup was and even though his story is somewhat sad (because I’m sure he probably wanted to be a big, bad police doggy like all his little friends) but if you’re going to fail at something, you should at least be super adorable and sweet about it, right?

I shared this article with my mom, because her dog is a little trouble maker and, since she loves cute pups too, I knew she’d love seeing this and showing it to her own little puppy to show him that being a good boy gets you attention.

The Twitter Reunification

Back in late November, a girl took to Twitter with a photo of a little girl she’d met on a cruise years before. She said the two girls had become quick friends on the cruise, but once it was over, they had no way of contacting each other and quickly lost touch. That’s when one of the girls posted the photo asking friends and followers to retweet the photo until her former friend could be found.

And the internet and social media, being as powerful and expansive as it is, answered her request. The two girls have been in contact and are planning to meet one another in person again very soon.

This one I shared with one of my college friends, because it had been a while since we’d been in contact and I thought it was a great way to reach out and say hello. I love stories about being reunited, so this one was both cute and beautiful. I look forward to an update on their tale.

Shoes for Riley

Nine-year-old Riley Morrison is a big fan of Steph Curry, the point guard for the Golden State Warriors. As a fan, she sought out to buy a pair of his Icon Curry 5 sneakers, which he produced and released with Under Armour; however, she was seriously upset to find they didn’t have the shoes in her size in the girl’s section. They were only to be found in the boy’s section.

With great disappointment, she penned a beautiful letter to Curry and he actually responded. Not only did he promise to get that mistake fixed and start offering the shoes in the girl’s section as well as the boy’s, but he also sent her a pair from his newest project!

I love that Curry was so sweet and gracious to this little girl (because you know he gets tons of fan mail), but most importantly, this nine-year-old stood up for what she believed in and made a major, important change all through the power of a letter. You go, Riley!

I sent this article to one of my co-workers, because she has a granddaughter about Riley’s age and I thought she’d love sharing this with her.

Homeless Man Donates to Food Bank

When Kevin Booth found a bag outside of the Sumner Food Bank, he waited until the organization opened, then gave it back to them. Not knowing what was inside, an employee opened it and found $17,000 in cash. The two decided to do the honest thing and turn the money into the local police station.

After the ninety days required for someone to step forward and claim the money had passed, the police department gave the money back to the food bank who shared it with Booth. Although he could have taken the money all for himself and never turned it in, he was rewarded for doing the honest thing.

I found this story both inspiring and amazing, because it was such a fantastic display of how wonderful people can be. Obviously, as a homeless man, he could have used that money to make his life so much better, but instead, he did what was much harder, but ultimately right.

I sent this article to another co-worker of mine because she is obsessed with reading stories about good citizens and that’s exactly what this was.

Hiker Saves Life Using Mother’s Intuition

This story is absolutely amazing to me. When Nancy Abell met Katherina Groene hiking alone on a trail in Washington State, she was worried about young Groene. Knowing the trail, she was concerned the young woman wouldn’t be safe travelling alone.

Although they only spoke once, Abell couldn’t get Groene out of her mind. So, seven days after their meeting, she contacted officials about a hiker who could potentially be at risk. Luckily, officials did find her and she had been in grave need of help. She was frostbitten and close to death, but Abell’s intuition saved her life.

As someone who loves hiking, I thought a lot about this story. I’m always afraid of suggesting hiking to others because you do always have that fear that they could potentially get lost or injured and I would never with that to happen to anyone. I sent this to a friend of mine who is also a hiker so we could both be aware to always look out for others.

Baby Rockers

In Lincoln, Nebraska, five retired women have taken upon them the task of snuggling with babies at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals. Most of these babies have injuries or illnesses and many are wards of the state or have parents whom are unavailable to be with them all day. In addition, many of the nurses are needed to deal with emergencies and medical situations, so these women are not only doing the adults a favor, but of course rocking the babies is great for their health. And who doesn’t want to cuddle with a little baby?

This article I sent to a co-worker of mine who recently had a baby and she said she cried reading it because it was so sweet. I’d totally have to agree. Those women are amazing.
